“Do for others what you want them to do for you: this is the meaning of the Law of Moses and of the teachings of the prophets” (Matthew 7:12, TEV)
Above verse is admittedly a message. But what do you notice from it? Is it not that you are looking at the words? Is the image or statue or picture of any person manifesting in the words? No.
Looking at another perspective, the “Word”, as a communication process, is composed of three participants, to wit; 1) Sender, 2) Messenger and the 3) Receiver. These are the three major characters in the “Word”. The intention of the process is to facilitate the exact message to reach the intended receiver.
The sender is God, who acted against human wickedness in Noah’s time through flood and destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah during the time of Abraham, as follows:
5When the Lord saw how wicked everyone on earth was and how evil their thoughts were all the time, 6he was sorry that he ever made them and put them on the earth. He was so filled with regret 7that he said, “I will wipe out these people I have created. and also the animals and the birds, because I am sorry that I have made any of them”. 8But the Lord was pleased with Noah. (Genesis 6:5-8, TEV)
29Abraham spoke again: “Perhaps there would be only forty.” He replied: “I will not destroy it if there are forty. 30Abraham said: “Please don”t be angry, Lord, but I must speak again. What if there are only thirty?” He said: “I will not do it if I find thirty”.31Abraham said: “Please forgive my boldness in continuing to speak to you, Lord. Suppose that only twenty are found?” He said: “I will not destroy the city if I find twenty”. 32Abraham said: “Please don’t be angry, Lord, and I will speak only once more. What if only ten are found?” He said: “I will not destroy it if there are ten”. 33After he had finished speaking with Abraham, the Lord went away, and Abraham returned home.(Genesis 18:29-33, TEV: Note: Abraham was pleading to the Lord for the sake of the innocent)
The human messengers in the olden times were Moses, David and the prophets, who, in one way or another prophesied the coming of the final messenger, Christ himself.
44Jesus said in a loud voice: “Whoever believes in me believes not only on me but also believes on him who sent me.45Whoever sees me sees also him who sent me.46I have come into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. 47If people hear my message and do not obey it, I will not judge them. I came, not to judge the world, but to save it. 48Those who reject me and do not accept my message have one who will judge them. The words I have spoken will be the judge on the last day. 49This is true, because I have not spoken on my authority, but the Father who sent me has commanded me what I must say and speak.50And I know that his command brings eternal life. What I say, then, is what the Father has told me to say. (John 12:44-50, TEV)
(Note: as part of the preliminaries, the name Jesus as cited in the above verses is subject to further scrutiny in this site).
When Christ departed, what was promised was not angels or Mother Mary or Virgin of Fatima or the Archbishops or the Pope but the Holy Spirit, which guides the Apostles, being merely witnesses of Christ, forever.
16I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, who will stay with you forever. 17He is the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God. The world cannot receive him because it cannot see him or know him. But you know him, because he remains with you and is in you. (John 14:16-17,TEV)
25I have told you this while I am still with you. 26The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.(John 14: 25-26,TEV)
8But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 9After saying this, he was taken up to heaven as they watched him, and a cloud hid him from their sight. (Acts 1:8-9,TEV)
As the Son of Man does not know the day or the hour of his coming but only the Father, we won’t be sure also as regards the identities of the apostles in our time.
Finally. who are the intended receivers nowadays? Of course, except for the apostles, for those who died for Christ and those who are already assured of eternal life, all are the intended recipients of the message of salvation, which is still being offered until its closure in due time.
But going back to the third paragraph of the article, the “Word” having no image or picture of a person manifesting in it, is it possible that believers have been deceived by preachers by producing an image to reflect “The Word”? Also, are you, as readers, expecting that Christ’s return, being one of the main characters of the “Word”, be manifested by his alleged picture or image now prevalent in stores and various places?
