Roman Catholic theologians and some alleged Christian preachers miserably failed in grammar when they failed to consider the use of past tense indicative mood of be, which is “was’ in John 1:1, which simply logically emphasizes that ‘the Word that became flesh’ is no longer God, when he lived among us.

Rather than grammatically acknowledging “‘was” as it is, they misinterpreted the phrase utilizing in effect the third person singular present indicative of be, which is ‘is’.  In other words, they in effect revised the phrase through deceptive indoctrination into “the Word is God” or specifically, “the Word ‘that became flesh’ is God”.

The verses related to the issue are as follows:

In the beginning The Word already existed: The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2From the very beginning The Word was with God. 3Through him God made all things, not one thing in all creation was made without him. 4The Word was the source of life and this life brought light to people. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out. (John 1:1-5,TEV)

14The Word became a human being and, full of grace and  truth, lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory which he received as the Father’s only Son.  (John 1:14, TEV)

Notably, the use of ‘was’ in the phrase “the Word was God” simply stresses to take out the Godness in the Word, when the Word became flesh. Therefore, Jesus or even the Word that  became flesh is not God. Also, as emphasized in John 1:14, the Word became a human being, explicitly not continuing as God. Otherwise, Apostle John would had simply stated the verse into “the Word is God” or the “Word was and continued to be God”  or stated in a language of similar import to clearly support the proposition that ‘Jesus Christ is God’. But that was not the case.

To further emphasize, the ‘Word that became flesh’ passage in the scripture, although more commonly understood to refer to Christ, is not exclusive to any person.

The scripture gives, among others, the following passages:

For animals:

24The God commanded, “Let the earth produce all kinds of animal life: domestic and wild, large and small”-and it was done. (Genesis 1:24, TEV)

Verses involving the creation of human beings:

26Then God said: “And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small. 27So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female. (Genesis 1:26-27, TEV)

Applying by implications the Catholics doctrine of “the Word, which became flesh, is God’ to above verses, then the animals that became flesh through the Word of God and the human beings, who became flesh through the Word of God may also be deemed as Gods, which are all obviously false.

In fine, clearly, there is grave error in the doctrine that Jesus Christ is God, as the past tense of “is” in the phrase “the Word was God, is being used in the verse.
